Home garden project
Sir Lanka has been in a severe economic crisis for the past few months which poses widespread risks to the people in various ways. The scarcity of goods and rising prices are leaving the middle and below the poverty line without alternatives. The commodities are available in the black market, and only for those who have money. People are forced to spend their working productive time in searching for goods and especially the daily waged labours are run short of money for the following day’s cash requirement. In some cases, the adults either reduce their normal food consumption or skip a meal in order to manage the family expenses.
Therefore, CDOs like us have the responsibility to prepare the community in resilience to such a situation by ensuring their food security. Accordingly, 3000 families who are under the poverty line and interested in home gardening, were selected from Jaffna, Kilinochchi, and Mullaitheivu districts. They were provided inputs and guidance for their home gardening activity for a period of one year (2022-2023) to encourage them to ensure their food security and nutrition food substance. Child First UK, TECH Outreach Malaysia, TECH Norway, WAPA & Tamil families in Singapore are the donors who support us to implement the project “Home gardening & Food security”.
- 30 parents of Siddu Pre-School students in Mallikaithivu village were recently provided with seeds, seedlings and equipment to encourage home gardening through Child First UK funding.
