Case story – Agriculture & Agro-well renovation -SDR
Sellan Arumairasa is a agriculture farmers of Chulipuram East. He is a farther of four children. His family displaced in 1995 and went to Puthukudiyirppu, Mullaitivu. In 1998 came back from Mullaitivu. As their house was totally damaged, his family was unable to live in Chulipuram. His family lived in Mannar for one year.
Toddy tapping is his traditional work. After his returned to native place, he worked as toddy trapper as a breadwinner of the family. He got injured in leg during trapping toddy. Then he started to do agriculture with the support of family members. At the beginning they planted onion, chilly, gingerly and did paddy cultivation too.
He used rain fed irrigation for paddy and used shared well from neighbors for vegetable cultivation. His agro- well was very badly damaged and filled with muddy. His request to renovate his shared well has taken in to consideration by DS office and CFCD. His shared well has renovated under SDR project supported by UNDP.
At present he extended additional 11 larchams of onion cultivation by the result of well renovation. The water level has increased because of clearing mud and deepening well for 2 feet while the renovation.
Storage facilities has supported by CFCD by constructing onion shed under agriculture support. Arumairasa and his wife say: “It is possible to get more price for our onion by storing them and sell those in better market price.”
