Success Story: Kavitha’s Journey
From Struggles to Strength:
Kavitha’s Journey of Hope and Determination.
Seventeen-year-old Kandaiya Kavitha, from Ariyaalai in Jaffna, (names and location have been deliberately altered) embodies resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education. Born into hardship, her father abandoned the family when she was just three months old, leaving her mother to shoulder the burden of raising five children alone. Her mother’s irregular daily wage income, combined with illness, meant that the family often struggled to balance essential household expenses with the children’s education.
Kavitha’s two elder brothers live apart and do not contribute to the family, while one sister, despite being married and employed, is preparing to move into her own home soon. Another elder sister faces a chronic heart condition and frequent epileptic seizures, making her unable to work. With so many challenges, the responsibility of survival often outweighed the hope of pursuing education. Yet, despite the struggles, Kavitha held onto her dream of learning.
Her breakthrough came when CFCD, supported by Child First (UK), stepped in with educational sponsorship. Since Grade 4, she has received consistent financial support, starting with Rs. 1,000 and growing to Rs. 3,000 per month, along with school supplies and occasional dry rations during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This support lifted a heavy burden from her mother’s shoulders, allowing the family to meet essential needs while ensuring that Kavitha’s education continued without interruption.
With renewed confidence, Kavitha excelled in her O-Level examinations, securing 3As, 2Bs, and 3Cs, with top grades in Tamil, Saivam, and History. She is now pursuing Advanced Level studies in the Commerce stream at Stanley College, determined to realize her dream of becoming a Bank Manager. Her ambition goes beyond personal success; she aspires to serve her community and provide stability to her family.
The support has not only enabled academic growth but has also built her confidence and respect within her community. Neighbors now invite her to tutor their younger children, recognizing her as a role model of dedication and perseverance. Through this journey, Kavitha has become a symbol of how timely support and compassion can reshape lives and inspire others.
Reflecting on her journey, Kavitha shared: “I could continue my studies because of this support. I achieved good results in my O/Levels and brought respect to my family. Some families now ask me to teach their children. I thank CFCD and Child First (UK) for this continued support, and I hope it continues until I complete my education.”
Kavitha’s story is a testament to how donor assistance transforms vulnerability into strength. With continued support, she is on course to achieve her dreams and uplift her community, proving that education is not only a right but also a pathway to dignity and hope.
