Case Story Varathakaran Vijayanan Thaiyiddy South Improvement of livelihood through Vegetable cultivation
Varathakaran Vjayanan is a young farmer of Thaiyiddy South. He is the bread winner of his family and looking after his widowed mother and younger brothers. His family got displaced in the year of 1990 while the exodus displacement took place in Valihamam North. His family accommodated in a welfare center in Vavuniya and returned back to their natal home in 2020.
As his father was a traditional farmer, he also started to do vegetable cultivation as their major income. He planted onion, tomato, and chilly in 36 larchams of his own land by removing all shrubs. Then the have got on lease 36 larchams of land for cultivation. SDR -3 project provided him agriculture tools and the support provided to him encourage him to boost the expansion. The young farmer with his brothers are actively involving in vegetable cultivation. He earned LKR 900,000 as income from his first harvest and earned LKR. 300,000 as profit during the economic crisis period. He happily says “ I purchased another 8 larchams of land from my income and we have no worries about food scarcity”. Now he is planting papaw in 20 larchams of plot. His family thanks the project donor and implementing partner for this timely assistance.
